Phthalate esters (PAEs) are the main plasticizers and softeners used in the plastic industry. Their function is to increase the plasticity and toughness of plastics, improve their strength, and their content can reach up to 50% of the final product. Due to the lack of chemical covalent bonds between phthalate plasticizers and plastic matrices, they dissolve when in contact with water, oil, and other substances contained in packaged foods. Moreover, the higher the content of phthalate plasticizers in plastics, the more they may dissolve. Research has confirmed that phthalates have chronic toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and reproductive and developmental toxicity to animals and humans, making them one of the most widely present chemical pollutants in the field. At present, research on the distribution of phthalate esters in the environment has been relatively in-depth, but the phenomenon of phthalate esters contaminating food through various pathways has not received sufficient attention. This article uses capillary column gas chromatography (GC-FID) technology to quantitatively analyze the dissolution of phthalate esters in 11 different brands of plastic food bags and packaged foods. Explored the contamination status of phthalate esters transferred to food during the use of plastic food bags.
